Apple released iOS 8.1 with additional features

The Cupertino based Apple Company has earlier promised to release iOS 8.1 on Monday, 20th October 2014, with their new iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3.Accordingly yesterday Apple has released the iOS 8.1 for iDevice users. Therefore, users of iDevices with previous versions of iOS installed can now update it to the latest iOS 8.1 through over-the-air, by selecting Software Update under Settings -> General.


A significant new feature in iOS 8.1 is Apple Pay. It helps for mobile payments in various apps on websites and at selected retailers in selected locations. Some iDevices such as, iPhone 5s, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 do not have NFC. So for those devices Apple Pay only allows users to buy things online and via apps.

Apple Pay supported devices

  • iPhone 6 (in-app, online and in-store purchases)
  • iPhone 6 Plus (in-app, online and in-store purchases)
  • iPhone 5s (in-app and online purchases only)
  • iPad Air 2 (in-app and online purchases only)
  • iPad mini 3 (in-app and online purchases only)


The company has stated that the Apple Pay will also arrive with Apple Watch early 2015. It means that over 200 million users of iPhone 5, 5c and 5s throughout the world will be able to use Apple Pay.

The new iOS 8.1 re-enables the missing Camera Roll album in Photos and iCloud Photo Library (as a beta version). And it also brought additional Continuity features such as, text message forwarding among iOS 8 devices and Yosemite Macs etc.

The latest iOS 8.1 also offers the iCloud Photo Library to users as a beta version. iCloud Photo Library act as a descendant to Photo Stream. It will spontaneously store every photo and video you have captured. Then those photos and videos will be made available from any iDevice and This feature has to be enabled under the iCloud section of Settings in latest iOS 8.1.
